About a real draft

The church in Sainte-Mère-Église is connected to the landing operations in Normandy on June 6, 1944. American paratrooper John Steele of the 82nd Airborne Division caught a parachute on the church tower during the jump. His story became one of the symbols of D-Day and reminded him of the character of the paratrooper hung at the tower. The event was also famous for the film Longest Day of 1962. The site thus links real architecture to a specific story of a World War II soldier.
